beer pairs well with ...

It isn’t just wine that pairs well with the food we serve – our ales and lagers do too.

Those who visit us regularly know how well our bar manager Dave keeps his beers. He knows how to look after the kegs to bring you a fine pint, and our front of house team are often getting feedback on what a wonderful pint we serve.

But Dave’s skills go beyond just looking after the beer – he has done (and continues to do as our guest ales change) research into which beer pairs well with which menu item, and can recommend the drink and the meal that will work best togther.

Dave’s Pairings:

Harvey’s Best: We have this on pretty much the whole year round, and Dave recommends pairing Harvey’s Best with our burgers, particularly our Lot burger as the ale pairs well with the cheddar and the sweetness of the bacon jam, with Fish and Chips as the bitterness cuts through the rich savoury flavour, and our Sunday offerings of roast chicken and pork.

Armada: A ‘get it while you can’ ale, this flies out of the pumps and draws in the crowds when it’s on as our guest beer. Goes well with our Sunday roast chicken as the caramel and biscuit notes harmonise well, with fish and chips as it cuts through the fatty element of the homemade beer batter, and as it complements the distinct flavour of Paremsan, goes well with our side offering of Paremsan fries.

Silverlake Pilsner: This is a fine lager from the Lakedown brewery and acts as a palate cleanser, so pairs well with some of our starter dishes such as prawn skewers, the Mexican style quesidilla, and with fish and chips.

Gun: the refreshing quality of our Gun IPA goes well with fresh searfood, of which we usually have at least one fabulous option on the menu; recent offerings have included fresh mackeral, sea bass and a spicy fish curry.

Guinness, Stella and Becks: all complement our fabulous fish and chips – but then what doesn’t go well with this dish?

Hawkestone Lager: yes, you guessed it – definately works well with fish and chips, but also works well with steak (see our Steak Night menu running on a Friday night throughout the month).

Hawkstone cider: OK, no prizes here, but pairs well with fish and chips, along with some of our spicier options such as the quesadilla.

Our menu and our guest beers are constantly changing to offer you the best of both – Dave is your man for asking about the beers and ales, so if you are unsure what will work best on our current menu just ask and prepare to have a delighted palate.
