The bells have been rining out at St Mary’s Church, Salehurst, for longer than (most) residents have lived here. Visit on a Wednesday evening and you’ll hear the bell ringer’s practicing – or not….
The past couple of weeks the church has remained quiet on a Wednesday evening – because our local bell ringers are short – not in stature, but in numbers.
Should there be an illness, or holidays booked, there are not enough to ring the bells.
If you have ever fancied giving bell ringing a go, maybe now is the time to see if it is right for you. Our bell ringers have been coming into the pub after practice since at least 1916, when the Halt was known as the 8 Bells, and still pop in every Wednesday night about 9pm. They’re a friendly bunch, so if you are at all interested in learning more, pop along to the Halt and we’ll happily introduce you.
